A Spanish study has found that patients who have used antidepressants at any time during a six-year follow-up experienced an average weight gain of 2%. The authors of the study recommend that these results should prompt healthcare providers to implement weight management and metabolic monitoring for patients with depression undergoing treatment with these medications. This multicenter research, conducted by the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute in Barcelona and published in Frontiers in Psychiatry, emphasizes the connection between the use of antidepressants and weight increase. The study utilized data from the REGICOR project, which monitored participants in Australia and the Netherlands, revealing that 2% of those on antidepressants experienced weight gain, with a focus on a substantial group of individuals aged 16 and older.
